Experimental and numerical infiltration studies in a wadi stream bed

Moisture content data from an infiltration experiment undertaken in the dry main stream bed of wadi Habawnah, south-west Saudi Arabia, are reported. A simple experiment enabled hydraulic properties of the multi-layer soil profile to be inferred through inversion of an unsaturated soil water simulation model. The results indicate a heterogeneous but highly transmissive profile and suggest that significant groundwater recharge will occur from ephemeral wadi flows, at least at that location. Etude numérique et expérimentale de l'infiltration dans un lit de cours d'eau de wadi Résumé Les données d'humidité du sol, obtenues au cours d'une experimentation dans le lit majeur du Wadi Habawnah, dans le sud-ouest de l'Arabie Saoudite, sont ici présentées. Une experience simple a permis de déduire les propriétés hydrauliques du profil à plusiers couches par inversion d'un modèle de simulation pour eau en terrain non saturé. Les résultats indiquent un profil hétérogène mais hautement transmissif et suggèrent qu'une recharge significative d'eau souterraine est engendrée par des écoulements du wadi, au moins en cet endroit.
